Occupied rooftop space is a relatively low-cost, sustainable addition to a building, especially for adaptive re-use projects. The International Building Code’s (IBC) rooftop occupancy provisions guide building owners/operators and design architects on the use of rooftop space so that it can be safely enjoyed by the building's occupants.
In this webinar, WJE fire protection engineer Nicholas Ozog, structural engineer Tim Fitzgerald, and architect Jason Aspin discuss the major building code (IBC/IEBC) ramifications you must consider when adapting rooftop space for occupancy. The presentation will address fire and life safety requirements, potential structural loading implications, and roofing and waterproofing considerations.
By the end of the webinar, you will be able to:
- Apply the provisions of the IEBC when introducing rooftop assembly spaces to an existing building
- Describe the building code provisions for means of egress that will be required to exit a rooftop assembly
- Explain the ramifications of a rooftop assembly area to the design and application of a building's fire and life safety systems
- Consider the structural implications of a rooftop outdoor assembly area, including the additional live loads and dead loads that the space will require
