Restoration of Frank Lloyd Wright Civic Center Roof "Respects the Masterpiece"

The Marin County Civic Center, Frank Lloyd Wright’s last and largest public project, underwent a major roof restoration, completed in 2020. WJE’s San Francisco office led the effort after decades of ongoing water intrusion prompted the County to pursue a full replacement rather than continued patch repairs.

“The project involved complete removal of existing roofing systems; removing, refinishing, and reinstalling the historic metal fascia; and installing a fluid-applied elastomeric roofing system custom-colored to the building’s distinctive Marin Blue,” said Leslie Scheppelmann, architect and WJE project manager.

WJE’s team performed extensive testing, structural and concrete repairs, to ensure the new roof performed reliably and preserves Wright’s iconic design. The restoration blends modern enclosure technology with meticulous historic stewardship, helping safeguard the Civic Center for generations.
