"Ask the Structure" Open House

Explore and learn about our diagnostic testing capabilities

Join WJE Austin from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM on Thursday, May 11, to explore a wide variety of diagnostic testing capabilities we employ in the field and our laboratory. Food and beverages will be provided.

Learn more about the demonstrations below and let us know you're coming by RSVPing below. See you soon!

Demonstrations

NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTING OF STEEL

Nondestructive testing can be used on steel to investigate internal and external flaws such as cracks and/or fractures that are not visible to the naked eye. The two methods we're demonstrating use ultrasonics and magnetic particle testing to detect flaws.

Demonstrators

Jeremy Wheeless, PE, CWI
Robert Gessel, ASNT Level III, CWI

DRONE ASSESSMENT

WJE utilizes our small fleet of unmanned aerial systems and team of experienced pilots to conduct structural and architectural inspections of difficult-to-access structures and buildings. Our drones are equipped with cameras and/or sensors, providing up to 34-megapixel photographs, 8K videography, and infrared thermal images of each inspection.

Demonstrator

Firas “Ross” Shalabi, PhD, FAA-Licensed Remote Pilot

UNBONDED TENDON PRESTRESSING FORCE FIELD EVALUATION

Engineers are challenged to determine the adequacy of post-tensioned structures without knowing the system’s effective prestress. While methods can be difficult and costly, WJE employs a nondestructive field technique, using a calibrated testing frame, that accurately determines the existing level of prestressing in an exposed tendon.

Demonstrators

Gabriel Carrera, PE
Robert Devine, PhD

NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTING OF CONCRETE

Nondestructive testing allows for the assessment of as-built conditions, material properties, and/or distress in a component without altering or damaging it. WJE regularly uses various NDE methods to diagnose issues in concrete structures in lieu of extensive and disruptive destructive testing.

Demonstrators

Corinna Slater, PE
Joshua White, PhD, PE, ACI NDT Testing Specialist

PETROGRAPHY

Petrographic examinations yield valuable information about the composition, cause of problems, and performance of construction materials. Our petrographers determine deterioration mechanisms that help identify the genesis of a problem. Alkali Silica Reaction is a deleterious mechanism frequently detected by our Austin Petrographers.

Demonstrators

Derek Cong, PhD
Chunyu “Joe” Qiao, PhD
Katy Aughenbaugh, PhD

ROOF DEFECTS

WJE utilizes infrared moisture scanning, a nondestructive testing technique, to detect the presence of moisture in roofing systems. The method involves using an infrared camera to measure the temperature differences due to moisture on the roof surface.

Demonstrators

Nathan Drees, RRO

STEEL BRIDGE ANALYSIS

WJE has a host of analysis capabilities that can aid in the construction and understanding of complex steel structures. 3D examples of previous analysis projects show how these capabilities are put into practice.

Demonstrator

John Kintz, PE, NHI 130055

CORROSION INSPECTION

Corrosion is a common factor in materials degradation, fitness for service, and structural failure. Using half-cell potential measurements, we can evaluate the probability of corrosion activity in reinforcing steel embedded in concrete.

Demonstrator

Stephen Foster, PE, AMPP Certified Coatings Inspector, NACE CP2

WHOLE BUILDING AIR LEAKAGE

The increasing demand for high-performance buildings has prompted various building codes and institutions to increasingly require whole building air testing. WJE uses in-house equipment and capabilities to perform quantitative air leakage testing for buildings of any size and complexity.

Demonstrators

Daniel Chavez
Gunnar Cantrell

WJE PLANNOTATE®

Our in-house electronic field note platform provides customization options that allow our project managers to create a project-distinct application for clients using forms, toolbars, and on-the-fly programmability. Plannotate® allows multiple users to record condition observations, annotate PDF drawings, and tag photographs to specific locations in real time.

Demonstrators

Katelyn Low, PE
Raul Olvera, PE

CONCRETE MATERIALS

In conjunction with our petrography capabilities, our laboratory performs a wide variety of aggregate and concrete materials tests. We're demonstrating sieving aggregates for testing, mortar batching, soak & length-change testing, and test prism samples. These capabilities allow us to diagnose construction materials problems and provide sound solutions.
