Capital Repair Projects Consulting

In response to the ongoing maintenance and capital repair needs required for U.S. Cellular Field over the past ten years, the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority (ISFA) retained WJE to provide architectural, engineering, and materials testing services for a variety of capital repair projects.

BACKGROUND

U.S. Cellular Field, formerly The New Comiskey Park, home of the Major League baseball team Chicago White Sox, opened in April of 1991 across from the original Comiskey Park. The new park was constructed with a cast-in-place concrete frame to which precast concrete exterior panels and seating risers were attached. The park contains three large public concourse areas totaling over 180,000 square feet.

SOLUTION

WJE provided investigation and repair services for the concourse concrete topping slabs, concession stands, and restroom topping slabs. WJE architects designed waterproofing repairs for the upper and lower level seating bowls; exterior and interior facade sealant replacement; and structural modifications for new elevators. WJE performed an investigation of light pole failure, provided a replacement design, and investigated and designed repairs for the concession stand roof. A water leakage investigation of the luxury skyboxes was also performed. WJE engineers conducted upper and lower level precast concrete expansion joint repairs.
