Experience

Rachelle Byarlay exceeds the Professional Qualifications for Architectural History defined in the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines. Her experience in historic preservation includes historical research, documentation for historic resource evaluations, preparation of Historic Structures Reports, development of architectural details, and production of construction documents for the repair and rehabilitation of historic buildings constructed of wood, reinforced concrete, and other materials. Ms. Byarlay has provided expertise on historic preservation projects involving window restoration, reroofing, accessibility design, and exterior stucco systems.

For nonhistorical existing buildings, Ms. Byarlay has developed architectural details and construction documents for restoration and repair, performed field observations, and provided assistance in the design of roofing and waterproofing systems.

  • Crystal Cove Beach Cottages - Newport Beach, CA: Development of architectural details and construction documents for rehabilitation of eighteen vernacular, single-wall beach cottages that were originally built during the 1930s‑1940s and now contribute to a National Register Historic District
  • Volcano House, Ohi’a Wing - Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, HI: Development of architectural details and construction documents for rehabilitation of a former administration building/hotel annex for reuse as museum and collections storage
  • Industrial Building - Sacramento, CA: Preparation of condition assessment report for a historic, heavy timber-framed industrial facility and development of construction documents and details for repair of modified bitumen and sheet metal roofing
  • Office Building - Santa Fe, NM: Development of architectural details and construction documents for rehabilitation and repair of exterior plaster cladding, modified bitumen roofing system, and wood elements of a historic adobe building
