The Congregation Sherith Israel—established during California’s Gold Rush period from 1848 to 1855—is one of San Francisco’s most prominent architectural landmarks and one of the oldest synagogues in the United States. As the structural engineer on the Congregation Sherith Israel project, WJE’s seismic rehabilitation design achieved full compliance with the required codes without disturbing the historic interiors and also supplemented story shear strength.
At the 2018 NCSEA Structural Engineering Summit, the National Council of Structural Engineers Association
presented WJE with an Excellence in Structural Engineering Award in the category of Forensic/Renovation/Retrofit/Rehabilitation of Structures up to $20 Million. WJE also received an Outstanding Project Award in the same category.
