Restoring the Washington Monument

December 2, 2012
WJE's first-hand account of the work done on the Washington Monument last year for the National Park Service is the cover story and main feature of December's Civil Engineering, the monthly magazine of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

In a preface to the article, Civil Engineering's editor Anne Elizabeth Powell calls WJE's work "extremely significant—and extremely interesting." She goes on to say, "The Washington Monument is not only a national landmark; it is a national treasure. Without doubt, the work performed by this team of architects and engineers will help it endure as such for many years to come."

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) cover story "Monumental Challenge" (Civil Engineering magazine, December 2012) was awarded highest ("National Gold") honors by the American Society of Business Press Editors for Editorial Excellence in the category of "Feature Article/Group Effort", and the 2013 APEX Award for Publication Excellence in print, web, and e-publishing. Congratulations to ASCE and their editorial team for being recognized so highly by their peers, and to the National Park Service for their continued partnership and support during the on-going repair and restoration of the Washington Monument.
