Melanie E. Gay

Since joining WJE in January of 2008, Melanie Pyle Gay has participated in a variety of projects involving the investigation, analysis, and repair of existing structures. She has performed field investigations and conditions surveys on a variety of structures. Ms. Gay has been actively involved in field testing for water penetration resistance, both in a forensic capacity and for the quality assurance of new construction.

Prior to joining WJE, Ms. Gay gained experience working at Hurricane Test Laboratory (HTL) in Atlanta, Georgia. During that time, she was responsible for conducting laboratory tests on windows and curtain wall assemblies per ASTM standards for code compliance and AAMA certification. While at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Ms. Gay assisted in the development of a student version of ASCE 7.

  • Georgia Institute of Technology, Hinman Building - Atlanta: Condition survey of facade and structural systems for 1950s-era classroom building
  • University of Georgia, Hugh H. Caldwell Hall - Athens: Evaluation of masonry distress for an office and classroom building


Damage Assessment and Documentation

  • Candler Building - Atlanta, GA: Documentation of tornado-related damage to interior finishes
  • Community College Campus - MS: Evaluation of hurricane damage to window and facade elements on large classroom structures
  • Multiple Residential Projects: Field investigation and assessment of wind- and surge-related damage following Hurricane Katrina


Water Penetration Testing

  • Hurricane Test Laboratory - Atlanta, GA: Conducted ASTM E-331 testing on windows, doors, and curtain wall assemblies for various window manufacturers
  • Mechanicsville - Atlanta, GA: Quality assurance testing of new windows installed in masonry and stucco facades of several multistory apartment buildings
  • Wild Dunes - SC: Litigation consulting involving the investigation of water leakage and alleged window manufacturing defects
