Benton S. Cook

Experience

Ben Cook started his career in structural engineering in 1996 and has acquired broad based experience with steel, concrete, timber, masonry, aluminum, and stainless steel structures. Mr. Cook’s diverse background includes new structural design, investigation of collapsed structures and other failures, and repair and rehabilitation of aging and distressed structures.

Prior to joining WJE, Mr. Cook was an engineering team manager with the structural engineering firm Swenson Say Faget in Seattle, Washington, and he was an associate with the structural engineering firm J.R. Harris & Company in Denver, Colorado.

  • Landmark Formwork Failure - Greenwood Village, CO: Investigation of collapse of 800-square-foot concrete roof slab formwork
  • Brittle Rebar Fractures - Denver, CO: Investigation of brittle fractures in cold-bent, galvanized reinforcing bars to be used in new precast concrete elements
  • Private Residence - Glenwood Springs, CO: Investigation of foundation settlements on hydrocollapsible soils
  • Convention Center Hotel - Denver, CO: Assessment of failed metal cladding panel anchorage on a thirty-eight story hotel building
  • Office Building - Glendale, CO: Assessment of failed Alucobond cladding panel anchorage on a 1980s era high-rise office tower

  • Open-Web Steel Joists - Northbrook, IL: Full-scale load testing of SJI-designed steel joists
  • Tri-State Energy Painter’s Ring - Nucla, CO: Load testing and rating of painter’s ring at top of 215-foot-tall steel steam stack
  • Rivergate Shear Wall Load Tests - Northbrook, IL: Construction and load testing of steel stud and gypsum sheathing shear wall assemblies

 

Repair and Rehabilitation Design

  • YMCA of the Rockies Conference Center - Estes Park, CO: Design of extensive structural repairs for 35,000-square-foot steel- and timber-framed conference center
  • Annie Mitchell Housing Roof - Aspen, CO: Design of retrofit snow fence system and its support by existing wood-framed trusses
  • Arapahoe Community College - Littleton, CO: Design of concrete repairs and plaza waterproofing system for main campus building
  • 3.4MG Water Tank Repairs - Canon City, CO: Design of structural repairs for steel roof framing with advanced corrosion
