Background

The Classroom Building contains approximately 73,000 square feet of classroom and flexible teaching space within three above-grade levels. It is steel-framed and primarily constructed with CMU back-up walls to support a Hokie stone veneer, glazed aluminum curtain wall, and architectural precast concrete facade and accent panels. The project is designed in the traditional Collegiate Gothic style of the Virginia Tech campus by EYP Architecture & Engineering.

Solution

WJE was involved during the design phase, providing comments and recommendations to ensure that the enclosure design was in alignment with the long-term objectives of serviceability, durability, and performance. The work continued in the preconstruction phase, at which time WJE provided submittal and RFI review assistance and participated in trade pre-installation meetings with the design and construction teams. During the construction phase, WJE was onsite regularly to observe and comment on adequacy of enclosure work in progress, to oversee and document field performance verification testing of installed curtain wall assemblies, and to make recommendations for repair as appropriate.
