Structural Peer Review of a Modern Sculpture

During fabrication of a large stainless steel sculpture, several parties raised concerns about the connection of the sculpture to the supporting building components.

CLIENT
PM Realty Group

Background
The modern sculpture consists of a fifteen-cube structure that hangs over the outside of the main entrance of the building and a smaller three-cube structure located just inside the entrance. The sculpture was added after construction of the building was complete.

  SOLUTION
WJE found that the sculpture framing was structurally sound but that the proposed connections to the building could not sustain the required level of seismic deformations. Recognizing that the original connections were sufficient for all but the most severe load cases, WJE worked with the structural engineer of record to design a simple, unobtrusive backup system that would “catch” the sculpture should a severe earthquake cause the primary connections to fail.
