Candler Building
Roof Replacement

A new roof was required for a historic high-rise building located on a site with very limited options for accessing the roof. Of particular concern was the integration of the new roofing system with the historic terra cotta perimeter walls. The presence of an existing rooftop HVAC system, including a chiller, with water supply piping and air ducts located around the perimeter of the roof further complicated the work.

STRUCTURE
The seventeen-story Candler Building was constructed in 1906. The terra cotta clad building is in downtown Atlanta and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was once the tallest building in Atlanta.

  SOLUTION
WJE created roof inspection openings to evaluate the condition of the underlying structure. Based on those findings, we determined appropriate roofing materials for the given conditions and prepared a detailed report outlining viable options, our recommendations, and cost estimates. We then prepared detailed design documents to accommodate the extensive rooftop equipment and the terra cotta perimeter and provided construction period services as the project was implemented.
