Cub Scouts Earn Engineering Activity Badges at WJE Headquarters
WJE professional staff gave educational presentations about structural engineering and facilitated hands-on laboratory experiments for the Scouts. Pack members toured WJE's laboratory facilities, learned about concrete, and created cylinders using rapid setting cement. Afterwards, Scouts had the opportunity to test the strength of their cylinders using a compression testing machine.
"It was really cool making the concrete cylinders," said Cub Scout member Andrew Walther. "We got to smash them, too, which was a lot of fun to watch!" he said.
Scouts also reviewed blueprints of major sport stadiums throughout the country, including Gillette Stadium, home to the National Football League's New England Patriots, and U.S. Cellular Field, home field of the Chicago White Sox of the American League. Scout members learned how drawings are used to depict structural systems, in-plan elevations, and section reviews.
