Historic Preservation
The houses were in a state of disrepair with significant deterioration in the clay tile roofing and decorative facade elements, including the window and door surrounds and arches.
BACKGROUND
The "South Houses" are comprised of four individual undergraduate student houses interconnected by party walls, arcades, and open courtyards. The Houses were designed in the Mediterranean Revival style by architect Gordon B. Kaufmann and were constructed in 1931. The buildings are deemed eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
SOLUTION
WJE architects performed fieldwork to assess the condition of the existing facade and roofing elements as well as the existing waterproofing systems. The architects documented existing deterioration and developed repair recommendations and construction documents, which were presented to the client in a report. WJE then observed trial repairs and mock-ups to verify suitability for the project and performed periodic site visits to assess whether the work was in general conformance with the design.
The completed project was awarded a Preservation Recognition Award by the City of Pasadena, California, in 2007.
