Building Enclosure Consulting Services

WJE is providing building enclosure curtain wall commissioning services for the new Brigham Building for the Future medical research building.

BACKGROUND

In 2016, Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School will take another historic step forward when it opens the Brigham Building for the Future, a facility designed to transform the future of medicine. This cutting edge building will help accelerate breakthroughs in biomedical research that will enhance the ability to fulfill a vital mission: to provide the most comprehensive and compassionate care to patients.

The building will be 358,000 square feet, have ten stories of new hospital space, and four stories of underground parking on the old Massachusetts Mental Health site.

SOLUTION

During the design phase of the exterior enclosure, WJE provided curtain wall commissioning services that helped the project team reach solutions that will unitize the entire facade. Whereas portions of it were stick-built, a fully unitized solution will avoid scaffolding the entire building on this congested city site. Special solutions to avoid condensation in high humidity areas of the building were implemented as an add-on to the basic building unitized system design to avoid a custom design for those areas as well as the added cost resulting from a custom design. Commissioning services will continue into the construction phase of this project until completion.
